Book Review: Dog Loves Books

As anyone who has ever come to the library to Read to a Dog knows, dogs love books.  However, the title character in Louise Yates' charming picture book Dog Loves Books might just love books a little more than most.  Dog loves books so much that he opens his own bookstore -- and in this economy, no less!

The first few pictures depict Dog enjoying the smell and the feel of his books, which is  something a lot of library regulars can relate to.  After Dog decides to open a bookstore, his preparations for the grand opening are extensive and take several pages.  Among other things he unwraps and stacks his beloved books, takes a bath and, of course, blows his nose.  But when he opens his doors, nobody is there.  Dog makes the best of a bad situation by "familiarizing" himself with his stock.  While he waits for customers, he reads the books in his store and, when an actual customer comes in, he is well prepared to offer suggestions.

Yates' pencil and watercolor illustrations are very appealing.  The soft pastels are easy on the eye and provide just the right accompaniment to Dog's flights of fancy.  Dog, himself, is a cute little white terrier with wonderfully expressive ears and a tendency to walk on his hind legs.

The next time you're in the library for a Storytime or to Read to a Dog , pick up a copy of Dog Loves Books and keep the fun going at home!

Miss Robin

P.S.  Dog Loves eBooks, too!
